Abstract

This study was conducted to offer the basic data for coping with emergencies and arranging securities for elderly, identifying the form of geriatric emergent illnesses and accidents through analysis of using emergency departments and pre-hospital care for geriatric patients brought to emergency room.
This subjects for this study were 273 patients over the age 60 who admitted in secondary and thirtiary hospitals in Seoul. These data were collected from July 30 to Sept. 20, 1999 by an interviewing using questionnaires. The data were analysed by frequency, mean, standard deviation using the SAS program.

The results of this study are summarized as follows
1. General characteristics of the subjects were thus shown:
a. 51.6% of the 273 ED visits were made
by patients 60-70years old.
b. in their housing, apartment house was first as 48.1 %.

2. Characteristics in terms of using medical
agencies for a year were thus :
a. visit to emergency room, 63.6
b, using hospitals are highest.
On the information of aiding in health, 66.1 % were with assistants at home. Its contents were chiefly about diet, medication, medical administration, exercise and movement.

3. Hour of emergent situational case involved was mostly in the morning from 6 to 12 a.m. Its place was their own house ( 82. 8 % ). On the occasion, 50 % were at rest or in sleep. Brought to emergency room, 54.1 % used 119 / hospital ambulance. Till then, 32.0% has not yet gained emergent treatment identified.

4. On Reasons for emergency room, acute illness was 35.2 %. Its diagnosis consisted in digestion system(35.2 %), neuro and sensational (18.2 %), poisoning and injury (11.3 %). Their consciousness then was clear(76.5 %).
Stay hours in hospital were from 20 minutes minimum to 4.8 days maximum in 2nd hospital.

5. General characteristics of companions
were thus shown:
a. sons or daughters living together were
most (64.3 %).
b. of them, 74.2 % were concerned with
health care.
c. 58 % knew little about emergent treatment.
d. 45.6 % acquired such information from mass com..

In the light of these results, it is evident that although the families care first for the
elderly when there rises an emergent situation, they have poor or little knowledge and education about emergent treatment.
With the rapid growth of the size of the elderly population, it is important that we assess the emergency medical resources needed to care for the geriatric population.
